We know what you’re thinking: sugar cookies aren’t the most exciting thing you’ve ever made or eaten. But neither was your ordinary-looking friend Joe until you saw him slap on a pair of 6″ stilettos and a lace-front wig. Then he was transformed into something that personifies everything fabulous, gaudy and over the top.
That’s exactly what we did here. So, utilize this simple recipe, and grab some fun cookie cutters and decorating supplies. It will entertain you, your kids, and — in our case — a kitchen full of fully grown gay men.
makes 2 dozen
- 1 cup good-quality, European unsalted butter*
- 1 1/2 cups confectioner’s sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
*You can use ‘regular’ butter if you want to but I would strongly recommend a European or European-style butter. They have a higher fat content and lower water content that makes a difference in the cookie’s texture and browning. We use Plugrá from Central Market.
- 1/2 pound unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- food coloring (optional)
